5 Tips to Keep Your Dog Healthy This Winter
Share
Winter in South Africa can be chilly, especially in the evenings — and your dog feels it too! Here are five simple ways to keep your furry friend happy and healthy during the colder months.
1. Keep Them Warm
Make sure your dog has a cosy, draught-free sleeping spot. A quality dog bed with a warm blanket goes a long way. Smaller breeds and short-haired dogs are especially sensitive to the cold.
2. Maintain Regular Exercise
Don't skip walks just because it's cold! Dogs still need daily exercise to stay healthy and mentally stimulated. Just keep walks shorter on very cold days and consider a doggy jacket for smaller breeds.
3. Watch Their Diet
Dogs may need slightly more calories in winter to maintain body heat. Speak to your vet about whether a small dietary adjustment is needed, especially for older or very active dogs.
4. Keep Up With Grooming
Regular grooming is just as important in winter. Matted fur doesn't insulate as well, so keep your dog's coat clean and brushed. Check their paws for cracking or dryness too.
5. Visit the Vet
Winter is a good time for a general check-up. Arthritis and joint pain can flare up in cold weather, so if your dog seems stiff or slow, a vet visit is a great idea.
